The 2021 UCI BMX World Championships will be held from 17 to 22 August 2021 at Papendal in Arnhem in Netherlands. bmx worlds

The 2021 championships comprised events in freestyle BMX only. Previous editions had included events in cross-country eliminator and trials.

BMX freestyler Chelsea Wolfe’s strong showing in a pivotal competition this week appears to have secured her a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Wolfe placed fifth in the BMX Freestyle Park finals at the UCI Urban World Championships in Montpellier, France, Monday, which placed her third overall in the U.S. Team rankings and should be enough to earn her a place as an alternate on the team. Wolfe would be the first transgender athlete to earn a spot on the U.S. roster. She told Karleigh Webb of OutSports she’s slowly growing excited at the prospect of competing but is also aware of the historic nature of the moment.

"It’s honestly slowly processing little by little how exciting that is," Wolfe told Outsports. "I don’t think I’ve fully wrapped my head around how exciting it is, and how incredible it is to make it so far with this wild dream of mine that I’ve dedicated my life to for the past five years."

The 28-year-old Florida native told Webb she brings a message of validation with her success, that all lives are "valuable and valid," and that everybody is entitled to their equal rights. If Wolfe is selected as an alternate, she would join Hannah Roberts and Perris Benegas on the team, who are currently ranked first and second. Roberts won the BMX Freestyle Park world championship title on Monday, while 2018 champ Benegas placed fourth. bmx worlds stream

Roberts married her wife earlier this year, posting to social media and saying she was "blessed [to] be beginning a forever" with Kelsey Miller and was looking forward to the love they will be "building together."

It’s been a long road for Wolfe, but she told Webb she hopes folks can find strength in their identity, even in the most hostile of times, in the way she has used the hate and adversity to fuel her drive to be the best.

Nikita Ducarroz, raised in Glen Ellen, is a world class BMX rider who will compete in the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. Here, she speaks with The Sun’s Anna Pier — her teacher at Woodland Star Charter School for grades one through three. Live Streaming BMX World Championship 2021

When I met you, the summer before first grade, I remember you as quite a daredevil. Yes, I had a climbing harness that I would wear to ride a zipline between bunk beds in my room. And I loved to ride my little bike fast in the street in front of my house. How did you get started riding BMX? It had to do with the anxiety stuff that was happening starting around when I was 11 or so. It got so I didn’t like to leave home at all, so I did independent study at my grandma’s. Then I quit soccer, and my parents insisted I do a sport, so I started mountain biking. I didn’t know BMX was a thing until I saw a YouTube of it. I thought, “That would be fun to jump off.”  So I made little ramps of plywood and crates in my street. Then I started going to the skatepark in Maxwell.

So riding helps with the mental health issue? Yes, it’s a combination of the fact that learning to ride and do tricks helps to conquer that fear, and it is such a passion for me. I wanted to practice so badly that I would leave home to go to Santa Rosa where I could practice and train. I saw a sports psychologist on a BMX series on YouTube, and I was lucky enough that my parents made it possible for me to work with him. He helped me break down all the walls I was putting up for myself.

Do you get scared? Every day it’s scary. What we do is very physical. But I’d say it’s more mental than anything else.

This is a first for you, competing in the Olympics.  How did BMX become an Olympic sport? When I started riding BMX in 2010, the competitions were individually organized by big brands. In 2017 the Union Cycliste Internationale started a World Cup tour. Some bigwigs from the IOC – the International Olympic Committee – came to view a World Cup, and not long after, BMX was added to the 2020 Games, happening in 2021.

You got a silver in the Elite Women’s event in the World Cup this year. Yes. I had crashed in the qualifying where they seed you, so I rode really early in competition. It was nerve-wracking waiting for everyone else, but somehow my score held up. It was pretty exciting. Tell us about why you are riding for Switzerland, not the U.S.  It was hard to decide. My dad is Swiss, I was raised speaking French at home, and we visited my grandparents in Geneva every summer. I ended up taking a chance. I’m the only Swiss BMX Olympic rider, but hopefully this will open up doors for others. We have national championships now. Watch WC BMX 2021 Papendal

Will you feel alone without teammates?  Not really. All of us international riders know each other. Where I practice in North Carolina, where I live, there are riders from around the world. A Venezuelan who is a legend in the sport owns the facility, and right now there are U.S., Croatian, Dutch and Argentinian riders here. Everyone trains hard, and the other riders help coach me. The first woman to do a backflip is my friend and she helped me learn it.

Do you have a coach? Yes. He’s from The Netherlands, and when we were riding together, he just began to naturally help me. So I asked him to be my coach early in 2020. He got the OK to be in Tokyo. I’m very excited, especially since my mom is not allowed. No spectators. He helps me figure out routines, and he’s really good at helping me not panic. I get to Tokyo on the 25th, and my event is August 1. UCI BMX World

Is that the course up on your wall? Yes, the one for these games. We have 60 seconds. That’s a very long time when you’re riding.

2021 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships: titles for Austria, France, USA and Australia

Comprising the spectacular BMX live Freestyle Park and BMX Freestyle Flatland, this year’s UCI Urban Cycling World Championships, in Montpellier (France) from 4 to 8 June, saw the four rainbow jerseys up for grabs awarded to athletes from four different nations.

It had been a while since the international BMX Freestyle community had come together for a major competition, due to the Covid-19  pandemic. With the cancellation of numerous events, riders were challenged to keep training, not knowing exactly when the next competition would be.

The confirmation of the 2021 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships gave the riders something to look forward to. The runs had to be fine-tuned and newly learned tricks needed to be mastered, all to be contained within 60 seconds for the Park riders, 3 minutes for the Flatland men 2½ minutes for the Flatland women.

Even without any public in the 14,000-capacity stands – due to Covid-19 related restrictions, pressure on the riders remained high, their motivation was palpable and the performances were dazzling.

Flatland: Dandois from silver to gold, history repeats for Sadovnik

In the Men Elite competition, Matthias Dandois (FRA) qualified first out of the opening qualification round, followed by countryman and good friend Alexandre Jumelin who received the best score from the UCI judges during the semi-final. bmx worlds live on tv

Things heated up during the final with Japan’s Moto Sasaki pulling off an incredible run to take the lead with only Matthias and Alex left to ride their runs. But after a clear two months of focus on the UCI World Championships, Dandois unleashed a perfect run to take the lead from Sasaki. The pressure was on Jumelin to do the same, but a few small mistakes left him in third, with the bronze medal.

Dandois, silver medallist in 2019, commented: “I didn’t know where I was at because there’s been a long time without competition, but after winning the European Championships last week I felt confident and now here I am!”

History repeated itself in the Women Elite Flatland competition with Irina Sadovnik of Austria once again winning the UCI world title. Sadovnik said: “It’s really amazing, I can’t believe it, it’s like a dream. You want to prove yourself again and you want to keep those stripes. I can’t believe I did a perfect run.”

Silver went to Julia Preuss (GER) and bronze to CĂ©line Vaes (FRA).

BMX Freestyle Park: Martin and Roberts confirm their form ahead of Tokyo

For the BMX Park athletes, it was the last chance to score points for the Olympic qualifying ranking, which decides the athlete quotas for each nation.

In the men’s Park category, it came down to a battle between the USA and Australia. The two nations were tied on points at the top of the Olympic qualifying rankings and this event would decide which country would claim two quota spots for the win, or head to Tokyo with just the one. The women’s Park was more open with 2000 points on the line.

Both the USA and Australia had their main players in the final. Next to the top-spot battle, the national rankings would also determine who will get to represent their country at the Olympic Games this summer. The pressure was on and everyone felt it. With the best run out of two counting toward the final score, it took several riders before a first pulled run happened. But as ever, the level of the tricks continues to rise. The 18-month competition hiatus was used to learn new moves, get in shape and go higher than ever.

Brandon Loupos (AUS) was well on his way to a good score in his first run but twisted his knee and had to pull out. He was carried off on a stretcher but came back for run two. It turned out to be in vain, piling the pressure on Logan Martin to collect the points for Team Australia. Logan delivered, not only in his first run, but run two as well, where he scored 93.30. That would have given him the UCI Park world title as it was the second highest score of the day. His 94.70 for run one was even better, showing everyone who was the boss. Martin said after the race: “I came out here wanting to take the win. I never slowed down during a year-and-a-half of work leading up to this event. It paid off and it’s amazing to win for the second time.”

Team USA’s consistency saw them deliver three riders in the top five. It gave them the lead in the Olympic qualifying ranking and the two quota spots that they were after going into the 2021 UCI Urban Cycling World Championships. Croatia’s Marin Rantes was the only rider not from Australia or the USA to break the top six and found himself on the podium in third place. bmx world championships live

The favourite for the 2021 Women’s Park title, Hannah Roberts (USA), had to dig deep after seeing Switzerland’s Nikita Ducarroz put a 90.30 score on the board early on in the finals. Charlotte Worthington’s riding has improved a lot, the Briton executing the big tricks such as front flips, tailwhips, flairs, 360s and backflips all in one run for 88.90 from the judges. With such high scores already on the board, extra pressure was put on Hannah. But she showed she can handle it and delivered a run worth 91.90 points straight off the bat, giving her the opportunity for a victory run with a smile on her face to wrap it all up. Afterwards, Roberts said: “I wanted to come out and put on a solid run and I’m glad that I did that. I’m glad that it got me the rainbow jersey back.”

Three time BMX Freestyle World Champion and Buchanan high school alum- Hannah Roberts is headed to Tokyo to compete in the sports Olympic debut! bmx worlds live

Roberts grew up playing every sport under the sun. Soccer, Basketball, football but Roberts said she wasn't a fan of relying on her team for success.

At the age of 8, she was watching TV with her parents when a BMX competition came on and it was love at first sight.

Roberts immediately fell in love with the freedom of the sport.

She entered her first competition at the age of 12 and it didn't take her long to become one of the best.

In 2017, she became the first ever BMX Freestyle World Champion at the inaugural UCI World Championships in China.

She placed third the following year before taking the title again in 2019.

Roberts had a perfect 2019 World Cup season to claim the series title, and went on to win the Pan Am Championships. bmx worlds live stream

Roberts is projected to win gold in the BMX Freestyle as it makes its Olympic debut.

"There are a lot of firsts. Yeah, I was the, I was the first ever World Champion in 2017, I won the first gold for Pan American Games, I won the first national and continental championships," Roberts said. "So it's just, it's a lot, and you know I like to think that I'm a very consistent rider and you know, coming home with an Olympic gold obviously would be incredible and a lot, you know, bigger than I could imagine right now. "

BMX Freestyle will compete Saturday July 31st and August 1st.

The International Cycling Union (UCI) has awarded the 2021 Trials World Championships to Spain, with the event due to take place in Vic during September.

The city is located in Catalonia, around 70 kilometres north-east of Barcelona.

The trials event has formed part of the UCI Urban Cycling World Championships since 2017, featuring on the programme alongside the BMX freestyle park, BMX freestyle and cross-country eliminator.

China held the last three editions of the Urban Cycling World Championships, but the 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. live stream UCI BMX Worlds

The pandemic also led to this year’s Urban Cycling World Championships in Montpellier being unable to stage trials competition, with the event running from June 4 to 8.

This led to the UCI arranging a separate Trials World Championships.
